What is a migraine?
A migraine is a severe reoccurring headache that is a result of both environmental and genetical factors. Typically, the headache in migraine affects one half of the head and the resulting pain can last from hours to even several days.
Headache or Migraine?
The pain in headache may be located on both sides or one side of the head, whereas in migraine mostly the pain is located in one side of the head. There are still chances that both the sides experience pain in migraine.Head
Migraine pain has a throbbing(vibrate, beat) quality and even slight physical exertion can worsen the pain; whereas headache maybe more chronic(constant) and steady.
Migraine is a neurological condition that can have multiple symptoms. Associated symptoms may include nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to light, sound or smell.
Some of the general pre and post migraine symptoms are :
- Food craving
- Increased thirst and urination
- Blurred vision
- Difficulty in speaking
- Pain on one side of the head
- Confusion, dizziness or weakness
Causes and Triggers:
Over the time researchers have identified possible causes but still fail to give any specific explanation for migraine.
Imbalance of a chemical called serotonin in brain causes migraine. It is influenced by ones mood emotions and feelings. When the level of serotonin in our brain increases one experiences happiness; on the contrary when it decreases it results in tension, stress, headache or at times even depression.
Genetical and environmental factors also play an important role in causing Migraine.
Things that triggers Migraine may differ from person to person. Most common migraine triggers are:
Skipping a meal or fasting as well as consuming highly processed food and salty food can trigger a migraine.
Alcohol, highly caffeinated beverages should be strictly avoided by a person suffering from migraine.
A balance in work life and home is what one seek for. Avoid any kind of stress that can trigger migraine.
- Physical Factors:
Extreme exercise or any kind of physical exertion including sexual activity may trigger migraine.
Lack of sleep or too much sleep is another major trigger for migraine.
A regular workout may prevent headache and will also complement a healthy 7-8 hour sleep. It is a major stress buster.
- Diet & Lifestyle:
Taking a balanced diet and having a healthy lifestyle is a must for people suffering from migraine.
Magnesium supplements are very effective in preventing migraine. Eating magnesium rich food such as whole grains, green veggies and nuts will be equally effective.
- Vitamin B2:
Milk, cheese, fish and chicken are a rich source of Vitamin B2. Taking Vitamin B2 tablets will be equally helpful in preventing migraine.
- Lavender Oil & Peppermint Oil:
Applying diluted lavender oil to the temples can cure the pain. It may also be directly inhaled.
The menthol in peppermint oil may stop the migraine. Apply it on your forehead or temples for effective results.
Ginger have many benefits and it eases nausea caused by migraine. Ginger powder reduces the duration as well as the severity of migraine.
